Hot Stove Banquet
Crowne Plaza Five Seasons Hotel
Jan 29  5:30 PM

This night will prove to be a night of inspiration and anticipation.  Anticipation for the 2009 season, as we hear from Kernels Manager Keith Johnson about the prospects we will have on the team next spring.  Inspiration will come from former Major League Pitcher Jim Abbott about his rise to the top despite adversity.

This night will also include the induction of the 2009 Cedar Rapids Baseball Club Hall of Fame Class as well as live and silent auctions to benefit the Kernels Foundation. The Kernels Foundation continues to sponsor the Jane Boyd summer baseball program and most recently the Boys and Girls Club of Cedar Rapids, the YMCA of the Greater Cedar Rapids Area and Taylor School to assist with their flood recovery efforts.

Parks Facilities

Walking Trails

Cherokee Trail-This is a 1 mile trail located off Johnson Ave. between Edgewood Road and Wiley Blvd. NW. Parking is along Midway Drive on the trail's north side. Fitness stations and shady tree-lined stretches of trail are features of this crushed limestone facility.

Cherry Hill Trail-
This crushed limestone trail is .84 miles long. It is located on the west end of Cherry Hill Park on Cedar Rapids NW side. Most people access this trail off of Stony Point Rd.

Noelridge Park Trail-
One of the oldest trails in the park system, this popular trail is in Noelridge Park on the City's NE side. The trail is 0.8 miles long. It regularly hosts fitness walks, walk-a-thons, and company fitness outings. Top off your visit to this trail by stopping to view the Noelridge Park Flower Gardens in late spring and summer, a game of tennis, or a visit to one of two playgrounds for the kids. This crushed limestone trail is best accessed off Council Street between Collins Rd. and 42nd St. NE.

Nixon Park Trail-
A .75 mile trail with very little grade change awaits users. The trail runs through Nixon Park and around Nixon School near Hiawatha on the City's NE side. The trail is crushed limestone. Two very nice ball diamonds are also available for park users at Nixon Park.

Sac and Fox Trail-
This is the oldest National Recreation Trail in Iowa. It is 7.5 miles in length and is crushed limestone. The trail follows the Cedar River and Indian Creek on the SE side of Cedar Rapids. The popular Indian Creek Nature Center is located midway along the trail, about 1/2 mile south of the Mount Vernon Rd. and Betram Rd. intersection. There are numerous access points along the trail and abundant parking areas especially south out Mount Vernon Road. Scout troops can check with the Nature Center for details on how to earn the Sac and Fox Trail Patch. Equestrian use of this trail is permitted. Users are asked to clean up after themselves and to refrain from taking horses over the bridges. Low water crossings are provided near each bridge.

Cedar River Trail-This all-weather trail now extends from Blairs Ferry Rd NE through downtown Cedar Rapids to Highway 30 on the city's southwest side. This 10.8 mile trail is ten feet wide. Experience the sights and sounds of urban wildlife along McCloud's Run, Cedar Lake, and the Cedar River. The west side of Cedar Lake also provides access to the newly asphalted trail segment that encircles Cedar Lake. This is a mile-long trail named the Cedar Lake Loop Trail. Parking for the loop trail is located on Shaver Road, south of the Interstate 380 crossover at H Ave. Parking for the Cedar River Trail is located at Tait Cummins Park on the south end, and at McCloud Run on the north end. Discover its smooth surface and gentle grade changes. Please exercise caution, hold bicycle and roller blade speed to a reasonable minimum and practice trail courtesies posted along the trail.

"Leonardo Torcuato & Shirley Hilton Exhibit"

Local painter and sculptor Leonardo Torcuato currently has several paintings on display. Pieces contained in this exhibit were inspired by the flood of 2008 and are created with mud from local parks and the Cedar River.
Leonardo said, “It was my interest to work with soil as texture, with its natural tones, before and after the
flood. The tones are different since the soil I collected was from different sites and different depths. I gathered soil from parks and from the Cedar River; from two meters
deep and from the surface…This is how I found dark, medium and light tones. This gave a natural richness to the texture, giving as a result, these works that I want to be a mirror of the uncertainty and pain of those moments and the hope of rebuilding our community.”

Making her debut at the PEC Shirley Hilton has been writing for most of her life. A native Iowan who studied literature and languages at the University of Iowa, she has worked as a teacher and translator in Mexico, a technical writer, a corporate trainer, a business analyst, and a project manager.
In 2005, while working on a novel, she began playing with paints in an attempt to better understand the instruments and methods of the principal character in her story, a painter. The works displayed are a result of Hilton’s playing
with paints

campbellsteele.com

In 1991, Craig Campbell and Priscilla Steele purchased a vintage 1894 storefront that originally housed Marion's Kendall Hardware. The warm hues of wood floors and an ornate tin ceiling that were original to the hardware store, now compliment a collection of original fine art in all media. Visitors will find the work of many of their favorite local, regional & national artists. Co-owner, Priscilla Steele has integrated her studio space into the gallery, so that you may learn how intaglio prints are pulled on an etching press, view her drawings and etchings in process, as well as view a rare selection of lithographs, etchings, foil-stamped monoprints, and wood-cuts.
