"The Producers" Feb 26-Mar 14 7:30 pm Thursday, Friday & Saturday 2:30 pm Sunday Bialystock and Bloom! Those names should strike terror and hysteria in anyone familiar with Mel Brooks’ classic cult comedy film. Now as a big Broadway musical, The Producers once again sets the standard for modern, outrageous, in‑your‑face humor. Two down-and-out producers come up with a brilliant idea: Get wealthy supporters to invest in a show, make it as deliberately awful as possible so that it will fail, and then pocket all the money. But what do they do when the show becomes a runaway hit?
"Proof" Apr 9-18 7:30 pm Thursday, Friday & Saturday 2:30 pm Sunday On the eve of her twenty-fifth birthday, Catherine, a troubled young woman, has spent years caring for her brilliant but unstable father, a famous mathematician. Now, following his death, she must deal with her own volatile emotions; the arrival of her estranged sister, and the attentions of Hal, a former student of her father’s who hopes to find valuable work in the notebooks that he left behind. The discovery of a mysterious notebook draws Catherine into the most difficult problem of all: How much of her father’s madness — or genius — will she inherit? The hit Broadway play brings a powerful and dramatic tale to the TCR stage.

Coastal Disturbances Apr 16-18 & 23-25 Fri-Sat 7:30 PM, Sun 2 PM This highly acclaimed Broadway hit, and Tony Award nominee for Best Play, takes place on a private New England beach. Leo Hart, a strong, handsome lifeguard, and Holly Dancer, a young, attractive would-be fine art photographer, are both rebounding from troubled relationships and find each other amid the gale winds of romance that engulf this sandy shore. Also inhabiting the coastal retreat these late summer days, struggling with their own stories, are Ariel, who has recently endured a difficult divorce, and her high-energy 10-year-old, Winston; the pregnant Faith, Ariel’s college roommate, and her adopted daughter, Miranda; and the older MJ and Hamilton Adams, who continue the quest for a more perfect marriage, even after raising nine children. This beautiful story examines love from all sides, amid the ebb and flow of summer life swirling around these individuals.

"One's impossible, two is dreary, three is company, safe and cheery." On his thirty-fifth birthday in the Big Apple, desirable bachelor Bobby is forced to examine his resistance to wedlock, when all his friends are either married or getting married. In Sondheim's 1970 breakthrough musical, extensively revised in the 1990s, Bobby learns (or does he?) that, while relationships aren't perfect, they are a necessary part of "Being Alive."

CRPL Adult Mystery Theatre Mar 12 7 PM These aren't your children's fairy tale characters! Well, okay they are, but they have been behaving in a decidedly un-fairy tale like manner. King Henry has been gruesomely murdered. He was found face down in Humpty Dumpty's yolk, apparently having been pushed from the wall as all the king's horses and all the king's men were busy trying to put Humpty Dumpty together again. Mother Goose is aghast and has appointed Sherlock Holmes as a special investigator. He will question each of our suspects, but it will be up to you to solve the mystery and bring the guilty party to justice. Take a seat on the jury! Join us for a night of suspense and intrigue. Space is limited: call (319) 398-5123 to register or for more information.

Cirque Du Soleil Alegria Mar 10-14
Alegría is a mood, a state of mind. The themes of the show, whose name means "jubilation" in Spanish, are many. Power and the handing down of power over time, the evolution from ancient monarchies to modern democracies, old age, youth—it is against this backdrop that the characters of Alegría play out their lives. Kings' fools, minstrels, beggars, old aristocrats and children make up its universe, along with the clowns, who alone are able to resist the passing of time and the social transformations that accompany it.

"Akarui" Apr 16, 17, 23, 24 7:30 PM, Apr 18 2 PM
A witch with an appetite for scientific investigation and a split personality, experimenting on the body of a young (and very conscious) murder victim; the murder victim’s psychotic killer, torn between violent impulses and a poetic conscience: a socially reclusive young tranny (changing from a female into a male); the impossibly sexy Brazilian musician who has taken an interest in the transboi; and a manta ray transforming into something human … all these characters convene at a warehouse at the end of the world, where DJ Akarui is laying down beats and conducting a rave in which all transformations are possible. Silverman’s extraordinary play is a unique theatrical event of explosive imagination, riveting energy, and penetrating insights.

"Stretch Marks" Mar 12-13 8 PM
Angela Kariotis brings lightning moves and a switchblade tongue to her brand of hip-hop theater, drawing as much from Greek philosophers as the breakdancers and beatboxers of the New Jersey ghetto where she grew up the daughter of a single Greek immigrant mother. When Kariotis riffs in her incendiary one-woman shows about being an outsider — white in a black world, black in a white world, a girl and a Greek and an artist to boot — she isn’t posing. Angela returns to CSPS for the Midwest premiere of Stretch Marks, a work mixing monologue, poetry, waackin’, vogueing and mime. Commissioned by Legion Arts, the National Performance Network and the John L. Warfield Center for African and African American Studies in Austin, Texas (where it premiered in November), Stretch Marks was inspired by Angela’s experience of having a baby. It is about being born and the legacies we inherit. Familial ties, blood bonds and surpassing the summation of our factual information. $11 + fee in advance | $15 door

"Reflections" Mar 20 8 PM Come hear some of the most sublime and meditatvie music in the repertoire, beginning with Iowa composer Jeffrey Prater's extremely personal and autobiographical work Promise. In the Lark Ascending, Vaughan Williams finds inspiration not only in English folk themes, but in a poem by the English poet George Meredith. This prchestral romance offers an impressionistic image of the lark's song echoing throughout the English countryside. Finishing the program, Mozart's Requiem is arguably the composer's greatest achievement. Though left to others to complete adter his untimely death, it remains to this day one of the most significant settings of the sacred text.

Dear Companion Mar 15 7 PM It was an auspicious meet-up ... singer-songwriters Daniel Martin Moore and Ben Sollee, together with producer Yim Yames (née Jim James of My Morning Jacket and Monsters of Folk) coming together to create a ground-breaking record inspired by their shared passion for the land and people of their home state, Kentucky. The issue? Mountaintop removal (MTR), a form of coal mining that is devastating the land and culture of Central Appalachia. “This is a human rights issue. There are a whole bunch of folks who are being forsaken and mistreated — literally poisoned,” Moore says, referring to the widespread pollution that is a result of MTR. Dear Companion was born when Sollee stumbled upon Moore’s music on Myspace. Upon meeting, Sollee says it was apparent “there was a strong connection,” especially over their concern about mountaintop removal. Those defending the use of MTR are primarily huge corporations with bottomless pockets fighting against grass-roots activists and artists who have little more than words and music on their side. While the themes might be dark, the music is not; the songs are shot through with light and hope. “My Wealth Comes to Me” and “Something, Somewhere, Sometime” provide perfect harmonies, showcasing the unity of these friends’ spirits and voices while evoking comparisons to fellow Kentuckians, the Everly Brothers. There is the slow boil of “Try” and the understated yet powerful loveliness of “Sweet Marie," centered on an orchestral movement composed and arranged by Sollee. All in all, Sollee and Moore provide a soothing and enlightening album. Most of all, these songs are packed with that most important and enduring ingredient of all great music: emotion. It’s there in every note sung, cello string sawed and guitar string strummed.
Taj Weekes & Adowa Mar 18 8 PM Taj Weekes is an enigma … on the one hand deeply serious and intensely passionate about his worldview, and on the other hand a gentle and humble man with a quick and easy smile. Weekes has a chameleon-like talent for blending into his surroundings as he keenly observes the world spinning around him, but the moment he steps on stage, locks flowing, he becomes a different animal, his voice rising from a hoarse whisper to a throaty growl. Deidem (meaning “All Of Us”) is a meditation on confronting the fragmentation of the world and the search to give everyone a voice in it. He explains, “Whether it’s Darfur, the Middle East, global warming … there’s something going on in every part of the world and we’re trying to bring it all together on one album. No one is talking to each other; the album is designed to create conversation where people can come together.” Taj’s commitment to a better world is backed up by his non-profit organization, They Often Cry Outreach, dedicated to improving the lives of disadvantaged children around the world via music, soccer programs and more. In conjunction with LIFEbeat, TOCO is helping raise awareness of HIV/AIDS in Caribbean communities. $11 + fee in advance | $15 door
