Bow Building Class
Feb 4  8-4:30 PM
Over time, many types of building skills have been lost to modern manufacturing. A skill that is still used today, as it has been for generations, is bow building. If you have an interest in building your own bow with the help of an experienced instructor, this is your chance.
Gene Winter has been building bows for many years and will be sharing his skill with workshop participants on Saturday, February 4 and Sunday, February 5 from 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. The workshop will be held at the Conservation maintenance shop, which is located behind the Conservation Department’s administrative building at 1890 County Home Road (next to the Abbe Center in rural Marion).
Workshop cost is $200 per person which includes one stave. Additional staves may be purchased for an additional cost. Registration by January 31 is required by calling 892-6485, as class size is limited.

Juarassic Jumble: Waugh Quarry, Wyoming
Feb 9  7-9 PM
Bill Desmarais will share thewonders of the Jurassic Period that has sported some of the
largest of all dinosaurs. Many times when they died their skeletons were taken apart by the forces of nature, like a flowing stream, then jumbled together for modern day paleontologists to discover. The Waugh Quarry, near Hulett, Wyoming, is such a place. This presentation will demonstrate field techniques used to find, remove, and document dinosaur remains from this Jurassic quarry. Participants will be able to do hands-on activities that simulate the work done in dinosaur quarries, for all ages.

Snow Snakes
Feb 11  1-3:30 PM
Wickiup Hill is hosting its second Snow Snake Family Fun Day. Come and make your own snow snake. Then challenge your friends or family members by throwing your “snake” down the chute. The winter game of Snow Snake was played by many northern American Indian tribes. The “snow-snake” is a long slender, polished wooded stick that ranges from 3-9 feet in length. It is an ancient game modified from the atlatl. The head of the snow-snake is shaped like a bird or snake head. The goal is to out distance your competitors with your throw of the stick. The snow snake track is laid out by dragging a log creating a small ditch up to a quarter mile. When the snow-snake is thrown, it glides down through the snow, shimmies and gives the appearance of a snake movement. Cost is $5 per snow snake. Registration required by February 9 by calling 892-6485.

Streamline Kids
streamlinekids.orgStreamline Kids

Programs:
Sports - Through teamwork activities such as sports, we help to teach our children the importance of hard work, dedication, patience, respect, accountability and good health and fitness. These are things that some children miss out on because of the financial restraints of their families. Streamline Kids will help in the research and placement of your child into the sport of your child’s choice as well as provide funding for entry fees, uniforms and equipment as needed.

Music - Through music our children are able to express themselves in ways that words can’t. Music is something that everyone enjoys and the songs become part of our lives. We associate some of the greatest moments in our lives with particular songs. When children have a desire to play an instrument we should not hold them back. We know this cannot be an option financially for some families. Streamline Kids will help in selecting the right instrument and teacher as well as provide funding for instrument rental (or purchase when applicable) and monthly lesson fees.

Dance - With the rise in popularity of dancing, more and more children are becoming interested in dance. Children seem to be born to dance as most of us have experienced with our own children. Dance is a great way to stay physically fit, express yourself, develop talent, learn the benefits of hard work and have a constructive extracurricular activity. Financial restrictions can keep families from allowing their kids this pleasure. Streamline Kids will help in the selection of a teacher as well as provide funding for uniforms, shoes and monthly lesson fees.

Gymnastics - Our children are very energetic. We have to be able to find structured activities to help keep them busy. And with the rise to stardom for some of our local Iowa youth, gymnastics is becoming more popular than ever here in Iowa. Gymnastics is a great way for kids to learn teamwork, dedication, patience, balance, and physical fitness. This type of program may not fit into every families financial budget. Streamline Kids will help in the selection of a Gym as well as provide funding for entrance fees, monthly fees, uniforms and equipment as needed.

Art - Sometimes sports and other physical activities are not what are children are cut out for. Sometimes they are interested creating things. Whether it be painting or sculpting, designing or acting, our children need to be able to express themselves through whatever their passion is. Streamline Kids will help by finding out exactly what it is your child is interested in doing and also provide funding for entrance fees, monthly lesson fees, and equipment as needed.

Wrestling - Wrestling is a sport that can dramatically improve a child's ability to perform in other sports. The pushing and pulling movements that wrestling training utilizes not only helps with improved balance, speed, agility and intensity, but it strengthens virtually all muscle groups from hips, legs, torso and upper body, and also neck and grip strength. Streamline Kids will help with the selection of a wrestling training group as well as provide funding for entry fees, monthly fees, uniforms and equipment.

Martial Arts - Martial arts training benefits children in many ways, like self control, self defense, and self discipline. It gives your child a chance to strengthen his or her body and mind. Children need to know how to handle themselves on the inside and out. Streamline Kids will work with you and your child in the selection of the discipline of your choice as well as selection of a teacher and provide funding for entry fees, monthly fees and uniforms as needed.

Scouting - Scouting helps today’s youth to build character, learn the value of responsibility and personal fitness. Streamline Kids will help in the placement of your child into one of these programs as well as provide funding for entry fees, uniforms and equipment as needed.

Come Fly Away With Us!
until mid March
The Science Station will host a new educational experience exploring the creative principles of flight. The traveling exhibition, Take Flight, opened September 21, 2011 and run through mid March 2012. Take Flight is composed of stations that are interactive and inspire visitors to learn about flight principles in a creative way.

“Take Flight will be such a fun exhibit. It brings learning and play together through cool experiences like making paper airplanes and launching rockets” commented Science Station Board President Todd Bergen. “The principles of flight are all around us, and because of that, it is easy to relate to them in this imaginative way”.

People of all ages will enjoy interacting with this exhibit as they experience everything from a hover port to an action reaction exercise. Keep current on all the fun events and activities that will be a part of this exhibit by checking the Science Station’s website, www.sciencestation.org, or following the Science Station on Facebook at facebook.com/CRScienceStation.

This exhibit was provided by support from Carleen M. Grandon and The Eastern Iowa Airport. The assistance from this generous donor and others makes it possible for the Science Station to continue to serve the corridor with highly desired informal science based education.
