Picturing America Intergenerational Family Reading Program
America’s History Through our Nation’s Art
From Feb.16 through Apr. 24, the library will offer another intergenerational family reading program! Similar to previous programs, Read the River, Books Build Bridges, and We are All Alike...We are All Different, the Picturing America program will provide a collection of books on America’s history for children 4 - 12 years old to be read to, or by, the child/children. This year, a new twist is added when a “companion” reader (age 13 or older) gets to read a separate book selection on a related subject. Each reader and companion completing this interactive reading program will earn a prize. See the Children’s/Programming Desk for additional details. Friends of the Cedar Rapids Public Library is generously funding the reading program.

This reading program is being held in conjunction with the Picturing America art exhibit sponsored by the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) and in cooperation with the American Library Association. Primary funding of the Picturing America exhibit is courtesy of NEH’s We the People program with additional monetary support from other federal agencies and private partners.

The Linn and Buchanan County Conservation Departments are cosponsoring a bus trip to Kearney from March 20 - 22 to view this spectacular migration. We will also make stops at the Iowa State Historical Museum in Des Moines. We will spend one night and part of a day in Omaha visiting the Durham Museum. We will also visit the Nebraska Natural History Museum in Lincoln. The trip will culminate with an evening observation of the cranes as they return to roost in the Platte River.
