Parks Facilities

Walking Trails

Cherokee Trail-This is a 1 mile trail located off Johnson Ave. between Edgewood Road and Wiley Blvd. NW. Parking is along Midway Drive on the trail's north side. Fitness stations and shady tree-lined stretches of trail are features of this crushed limestone facility.

Cherry Hill Trail-
This crushed limestone trail is .84 miles long. It is located on the west end of Cherry Hill Park on Cedar Rapids NW side. Most people access this trail off of Stony Point Rd.

Noelridge Park Trail-
One of the oldest trails in the park system, this popular trail is in Noelridge Park on the City's NE side. The trail is 0.8 miles long. It regularly hosts fitness walks, walk-a-thons, and company fitness outings. Top off your visit to this trail by stopping to view the Noelridge Park Flower Gardens in late spring and summer, a game of tennis, or a visit to one of two playgrounds for the kids. This crushed limestone trail is best accessed off Council Street between Collins Rd. and 42nd St. NE.

Nixon Park Trail-
A .75 mile trail with very little grade change awaits users. The trail runs through Nixon Park and around Nixon School near Hiawatha on the City's NE side. The trail is crushed limestone. Two very nice ball diamonds are also available for park users at Nixon Park.

Sac and Fox Trail-
This is the oldest National Recreation Trail in Iowa. It is 7.5 miles in length and is crushed limestone. The trail follows the Cedar River and Indian Creek on the SE side of Cedar Rapids. The popular Indian Creek Nature Center is located midway along the trail, about 1/2 mile south of the Mount Vernon Rd. and Betram Rd. intersection. There are numerous access points along the trail and abundant parking areas especially south out Mount Vernon Road. Scout troops can check with the Nature Center for details on how to earn the Sac and Fox Trail Patch. Equestrian use of this trail is permitted. Users are asked to clean up after themselves and to refrain from taking horses over the bridges. Low water crossings are provided near each bridge.

Cedar River Trail-This all-weather trail now extends from Blairs Ferry Rd NE through downtown Cedar Rapids to Highway 30 on the city's southwest side. This 10.8 mile trail is ten feet wide. Experience the sights and sounds of urban wildlife along McCloud's Run, Cedar Lake, and the Cedar River. The west side of Cedar Lake also provides access to the newly asphalted trail segment that encircles Cedar Lake. This is a mile-long trail named the Cedar Lake Loop Trail. Parking for the loop trail is located on Shaver Road, south of the Interstate 380 crossover at H Ave. Parking for the Cedar River Trail is located at Tait Cummins Park on the south end, and at McCloud Run on the north end. Discover its smooth surface and gentle grade changes. Please exercise caution, hold bicycle and roller blade speed to a reasonable minimum and practice trail courtesies posted along the trail.

"Mauricio Lasansky: Master Printmaker"
Permanent exhibitionMauricio Lasansky
Making prints for more than 65 years-first in his native Argentina, then in New York City, and for more than 55 years in Iowa City, Iowa-Lasansky's generous gift of prints in the 1980s and 1990s has made it possible for the Museum to present a wide range of the artist's works, changing all four galleries every six months. Best known for large-scale prints in which he uses multiple plates and full ranges of color, Lasansky combines a spectrum of graphic techniques including etching, drypoint, aquatint, and engraving. Throughout his stylistic evolution, he has created eloquent figural statements that are colorful, fresh, and spontaneous.

"Art In Roman Life"
Permanent exhibitionArt In Roman Life
An exhibition of more than 50 works, including 21 Roman portrait busts donated to the CRMA by Tom and Nan Riley in 1996, this installation is a condensed version of the CRMA’s immensely popular Art in Roman Life: Villa to Grave exhibition. From coins to glass vessels to ceramic lamps to marble sculptures, this exhibition reveals more than 600 years of artistic production, which comprised daily life in Rome from the 1st century B.C. through the fall of the Roman Empire.

"Malvina Hoffman: Rodin's Last StudentMalvina Hoffman
Permanent exhibition
In 1910, the young sculptress Malvina Hoffman (1885-1966) arrived at the door of French sculptor Auguste Rodin (1840-1917) with a letter of introduction. After five attempts by Hoffman to meet the master, Rodin immediately agreed to take her on as a pupil upon seeing photographs of two of her works. What followed was a rewarding relationship between one of the greatest sculptors of all time and his last student. Hoffman went on to a successful career as a sculptor, perhaps most famous for her 100 sculptures for the Chicago Field Museum's Hall of Man.

Grant Wood In FocusWoman With Plant
Culled from the Museum’s extensive collection of work by Grant Wood, this single-gallery installation will trace Wood’s entire career from his youthful creations until his death in 1942.  It will serve as an overview of the artistic achievements of this important American painter.

Treasures From The National CollectionTreasures From The National Collection
The CRMA is excited to provide a second floor gallery space for the National Czech & Slovak Museum & Library (NCSML) for a special exhibition from their permanent collection. The exhibition, Treasures from the National Collection, will open at the CRMA on June 20.
This exhibit will feature examples of fine, folk, and decorative art. One piece on display will be “Paul and Andy” by Paul Warhola. It was damaged in the June flood, but has been repaired by experts at the Chicago Conservation Center. Paul Warhola is the older brother of Andy Warhol. Textiles embellished with beads and embroidery will also be displayed, including several full kroj. Anyone who has seen our folk costumes can attest to their status as works of art. The gallery will also contain some of our fine Royal Dux porcelain pieces, as well as glass and crystal from well known makers such as Moser, Rindskopf and Teplice.

The American CenturyAdoration Of The Home
In this new installation of the permanent collection, the many movements of twentieth-century American art will be highlighted.  While the CRMA’s collection is considered one of the foremost in Midwestern art, it also possesses numerous examples of art from other regions of the United States and can demonstrate many of the movements and interests of art in America in the twentieth century, the century in which American art came to dominate the art world.

Drawn To Drawing
Jan 2-Apr 18Black Over Colors
Late 2008 and early 2009 were watershed moments for the addition of drawings to the Cedar Rapids Museum of Art’s collection.  On the heels of the impressive gift of fifty drawings, paintings, and sculptures from New York collectors Herb and Dorothy Vogel, another New York collector and his wife donated an important group of twenty drawings to the CRMA.  In many ways, this more recent gift picks up where the Vogel gift leaves off, including works by both well- and lesser-known artists from the 1970s to today.  Like the Vogel collection, the focus is on minimal and conceptual works, demonstrating the lasting legacy of those movements.

Less Is More: The Vogel Gift Of Minimal and Conceptual Art
Jan 22-May 2Study For The Vogels
In 2008, the Cedar Rapids Museum of Art was selected by the Vogels to be the Iowa recipient of a collection of 50 works as a part of The Dorothy and Herbert Vogel Collection: Fifty Works for Fifty States initiative.  Less is More will exhibit the entire Vogel gift to Iowa for the first time.
He was a postal clerk.  She was a librarian.  With their modest means, the couple managed to build one of the most important contemporary art collections in the United States.  Best known for collecting minimal and conceptual works, the couple managed to amass more than 4,000 works before deciding to donate a substantial number to the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., and retaining 2,500 for distribution to 50 museums, one in each of the 50 states.

at the Cedar Rapids Museum of Art

Beautifully embellished folk costumes, ornate crystal, Royal Dux porcelain, colorful glass, and one of Paul Warhola’s famous silk-screens (picturing Paul with his brother, Andy Warhol) come together in this vibrant exhibition. Rising Above: The Story Of A People And The Flood

Opening soonRising Above
This exhibition tells the story of the flood of 2008, one of the largest natural disasters in the history of the United States. It will be told in conjunction with the history of Czechs in Cedar Rapids and Czech Village and how the flood affected the people and their neighborhoods.
Upon entering the exhibition, visitors will be confronted by a huge aerial photo showing a vast swath of the Cedar Rapids cityscape that was completely inundated. In the lower right hand corner of the photo, Czech Village is up to its neck.
As visitors progress through the exhibition, they will view images and listen to personal accounts of the flood damage, clean-up and recovery. An interactive scale model of the cityscape of Cedar Rapids will vividly compare the 2008 flood to the previous floods of 1929 and 1993. News stories, video and eye-witness accounts carry the visitor through the experience of the flood, moment by devastating moment, culminating with a walk-in model of a flooded house. Visitors will complete their journey in a restoration and memory area where they may view recovery progress and share their memories.

Gallery hours are Tuesday through Friday 10 am to 5:30 pm and Saturdays from 10 am - 4 pm
The doors to the CornerHouse Gallery & Frame opened in 1976, combining an exhibition venue for contemporary, professional artists of the Midwestern States with a premier state-of-the-art framing studio. Since that time, the original 1906 building has been expanded to house over 3,000 square feet of gallery space plus the 1,500 square feet onsite-framing studio. In addition to exhibiting emerging and mid-career 20/21st century artists with Midwestern ties, the CornerHouse focuses on the work of Grant Wood, Marvin Cone, Thomas Hart Benton and Conger Metcalf.

John Mominee Showing

The colorful abstract monoprints of John Mominee and introducing the intellectually intriguing drawings and paintings of Philip Kirk will be featured in a show at CornerHouse Gallery and Frame.

A full-time painter and printmaker since 1994, John has been producing colorful abstract monotypes for over 25 years. To him, creating an abstract work of art is like playing jazz; allowing print after print to evolve from a single idea that is altered in each new work. Using unusual color combinations, he purposefully makes 'discords' harmonious.

onto large pieces of Plexiglas, which he then runs through an etching press, transferring the image from the plate onto a piece of D’Arches paper.  In many ways, John Mominee is a missing link in the transition from painting to printmaking and back again. “I’m trying for purity in form and idea,” says Mominee.  Working with the monotype allows Mominee to merge characteristics unique to printmaking and painting, thus creating art impossible to achieve any other way.  Mominee adds lines and layers of color enhancing each print; the resulting works are rich in color and in visual complexity.

Iowa City artist, Philip Kirk, has been an artist since he was a child.  In high school, he discovered the artwork of Paul Klee and Albrecht Durer and they continue to be primary influences on his work.  He attended the University of Iowa and studied printmaking, spending most of his time in the print shop.  Kirk works in various media, such as watercolor, acrylic, pen and ink. “The work is derived from a place inside my head (not a big head, but one with a lot of stuff inside), which is drawn out and made visible, peculiar to the region and unbound by the laws of nature.  I always like to try new things so there is a lot of variety in my imagery and materials.”

The exhibit, closely resembling an old-style sports bar, features the world’s most complete collection of memorabilia from the 2010 “More Than Super” Super Bowl re-enactment between Jude Tallichet (who played the Colts) and Matt Freedman (who played the Saints). The 'More Than Super' re-enactment was a simultaneous, play-by-play restaging of the Super Bowl with a small army of collaborators who substituted themselves for all the roles in the spectacle, including players, referees, TV producers, half-time performers, advertisers, team owners, and fans in the stadium.

Campbell Steele Gallery
1064 7th Ave, Marion
campbellsteele.com

In 1991, Craig Campbell and Priscilla Steele purchased a vintage 1894 storefront that originally housed Marion's Kendall Hardware. The warm hues of wood floors and an ornate tin ceiling that were original to the hardware store, now compliment a collection of original fine art in all media. Visitors will find the work of many of their favorite local, regional & national artists. Co-owner, Priscilla Steele has integrated her studio space into the gallery, so that you may learn how intaglio prints are pulled on an etching press, view her drawings and etchings in process, as well as view a rare selection of lithographs, etchings, foil-stamped monoprints, and wood-cuts.
Gallery hours are now Thur, Fri & Sat from 10 in the morning until 6 in the evening ... and anytime you'd like, by appointment.  Just call us at 319-373-9211, at least one day in advance, and we'd be happy to open the gallery for you at your convenience ... day or night.

Michael BondCity View, Michael Bond
On a trip to Italy about four years ago, I luxuriated in visits to places and art about which I had studied in a succession of classes with renowned Italian Renaissance scholar and professor, Dr. Wallace Tommasini. So it was with great excitement that I enthused that I “…couldn’t wait to see the Duomo!”, as I crossed Florence’s Ponte Vecchio. My head was bent low over multiple guidebooks which I was busily cross-referencing, and members of my ever-forbearing family urged me to simply look up. Talk about a big pizza pie hitting you in the eye! That singular architectural achievement, which is visible from all parts of the city, looms large as a testament to the indomitable genius of its designer Fillipo Brunnelleschi and the civic will of the Florentine populace. Our entire visit was a giddy blur of art, food, family and Italian wine. It was with no small measure of fondness then when I happened upon Michael Bond’s lyrical little etching of the Ponte Vecchio. I’m proud to say that the etchings of Michael Bond are now represented at the gallery.

Stan FellowsFeb 15, Stan Fellows
Stan had illustrated for the New York Times and The Wall Street Journal, that he had illustrated many books, and he had enjoyed a very busy and successful career as an illustrator for more than thirty years. It’s therefore a particular delight for me to introduce some of Stan’s watercolors to our gallery audience. And, it’s just downright fun that Stan is going to attend and paint during (right on the spot, ladies and gentlemen!) Music in the M.U.D. this Saturday, March 14. Music in the M.U.D. is a new, Saturday night event at Campbell Steele that is getting some serious traction. Pair Stan’s painting with the fact that our cute-as –a-button purveyor of wines, Jeri Travis, will be decanting some delicious selections for our wine bar, and what you have is a great plan. Fun abounds at Campbell Steele.

Mary Snyder Behrends
Judges 9, Mary Snyder BehrensThe rich colors, carefully chosen elements and implied content in Mary’s pieces are not unlike the essence of a Leonard Cohen song. They are not always “pretty” in their overt presentation. They are thought provoking on multiple levels. They use the artist’s substitute for words, visual materials, with economy and a keen sense of purpose. Mary’s work is intense. It rewards the curiosity of the viewer with an understanding of how line, color, texture and composition shape an abstract, poetic conceit.

Julie KottalX-Scape 6, Julie Kottal
With her former advisor, Peter Thompson, Julie shares a keen color sense and a painterly fluency. And, the brilliance of Peter’s teaching and the strength of Julie’s artistic will and vision lie in the dramatic distinctions in their imagery. Since her graduation from Coe College, Julie has truly gained an authority in abstract composition. Her gestural, large-scale work now hanging at the gallery is a juicy testament to the the physically of her medium. I’d say that this woman could handily claim her own status as a “powerhouse”.
