Cedar Rapids Museum of Arts 410 3rd Ave SE www.crma.org
"Mauricio Lasansky: Master Printmaker" Permanent exhibition Making prints for more than 65 years-first in his native Argentina, then in New York City, and for more than 55 years in Iowa City, Iowa-Lasansky's generous gift of prints in the 1980s and 1990s has made it possible for the Museum to present a wide range of the artist's works, changing all four galleries every six months. Best known for large-scale prints in which he uses multiple plates and full ranges of color, Lasansky combines a spectrum of graphic techniques including etching, drypoint, aquatint, and engraving. Throughout his stylistic evolution, he has created eloquent figural statements that are colorful, fresh, and spontaneous.
"Art In Roman Life" Permanent exhibition An exhibition of more than 50 works, including 21 Roman portrait busts donated to the CRMA by Tom and Nan Riley in 1996, this installation is a condensed version of the CRMA’s immensely popular Art in Roman Life: Villa to Grave exhibition. From coins to glass vessels to ceramic lamps to marble sculptures, this exhibition reveals more than 600 years of artistic production, which comprised daily life in Rome from the 1st century B.C. through the fall of the Roman Empire.
Grant Wood In Focus Culled from the Museum’s extensive collection of work by Grant Wood, this single-gallery installation will trace Wood’s entire career from his youthful creations until his death in 1942. It will serve as an overview of the artistic achievements of this important American painter.
Treasures From The National Collection The CRMA is excited to provide a second floor gallery space for the National Czech & Slovak Museum & Library (NCSML) for a special exhibition from their permanent collection. The exhibition, Treasures from the National Collection, will open at the CRMA on June 20. This exhibit will feature examples of fine, folk, and decorative art. One piece on display will be “Paul and Andy” by Paul Warhola. It was damaged in the June flood, but has been repaired by experts at the Chicago Conservation Center. Paul Warhola is the older brother of Andy Warhol. Textiles embellished with beads and embroidery will also be displayed, including several full kroj. Anyone who has seen our folk costumes can attest to their status as works of art. The gallery will also contain some of our fine Royal Dux porcelain pieces, as well as glass and crystal from well known makers such as Moser, Rindskopf and Teplice.
The American Century In this new installation of the permanent collection, the many movements of twentieth-century American art will be highlighted. While the CRMA’s collection is considered one of the foremost in Midwestern art, it also possesses numerous examples of art from other regions of the United States and can demonstrate many of the movements and interests of art in America in the twentieth century, the century in which American art came to dominate the art world.

"Lure of the Local: Collecting the Corridor, 2006-2011"
Feb 4-May 13
Beginning with its first acquisition in 1906, the Cedar Rapids Art Association (now Cedar Rapids Museum of Art) has valued art of its own time, often by local and Midwestern artists. While initially acquiring work at the rate of one or two pieces each year, the CRMA collection has grown to more than 7,000 works of art. Significant among these additions are works of art by local artists Grant Wood and Marvin Cone, which came into the collection primarily in the 1970s and 1980s. Throughout the Museum’s 105 year history, the acquisition of local and regional art has continued to be strong and the works of Wood and Cone have been joined by works from artists such as Dick Pinney, Joan Liffring-Zug Bourret, Fred Easker, Stan Wiederspan, and many others. Over the past five years, a concerted effort has been made to keep this tradition alive. The results of these recent acquisitions form the basis of the exhibition on view here. These local and regional works, all added from 2006 to 2011, are a continuation of the legacy of local art at the Museum.

Rising Above: The Story Of A People And The Flood
Open Now
This exhibition tells the story of the flood of 2008, one of the largest natural disasters in the history of the United States. It will be told in conjunction with the history of Czechs in Cedar Rapids and Czech Village and how the flood affected the people and their neighborhoods. Upon entering the exhibition, visitors will be confronted by a huge aerial photo showing a vast swath of the Cedar Rapids cityscape that was completely inundated. In the lower right hand corner of the photo, Czech Village is up to its neck. As visitors progress through the exhibition, they will view images and listen to personal accounts of the flood damage, clean-up and recovery. An interactive scale model of the cityscape of Cedar Rapids will vividly compare the 2008 flood to the previous floods of 1929 and 1993. News stories, video and eye-witness accounts carry the visitor through the experience of the flood, moment by devastating moment, culminating with a walk-in model of a flooded house. Visitors will complete their journey in a restoration and memory area where they may view recovery progress and share their memories.

Four Directions, Four Printmakers until Mar 31 This exhibition brings together four master printmakers from four areas of the United States: Robert Kennon (Missouri), Kent Kapplinger (North Dakota), Catherine Chauvin (Colorado) and Ralph Slatton (Tennessee). These artists have created a unique collection of prints in a variety of media from etching, engraving, lithography and silkscreen. Their subject matter covers four vastly different directions including rock formations, machinery, animals and landscapes; introducing a variety of styles influenced by realism, abstraction, surrealism and romanticism.
Clay: My Diversity of Expressions Until Mar 31 Gary Hootman has spent the last 27 years well… refining the epic and unpredictable art of wood-fired ceramics. The ancient firing process is an around-the-clock affair sometimes lasting up to six days. It is not for the faint hearted. Gary built his studio, and the first of his wood-fired kilns, on land owned by his grandmother near Cedar Rapids. When tending the firings became too much for him and his family alone, Gary enlisted other artists for help in exchange for kiln space. For the last few years, Gary has worked on both sculptural and functional works, and on bringing the two together as a whole. He says his goal is “to make objects that span the history of art forms in a contemporary sense…. The universal is what I continue to strive toward.” In a 2004 profile of the artist in Ceramics Monthly, James Kasper wrote, “The well from which [Hootman’s] efforts spring is his quest to get at the core of our human response to form, from the Venus of Wildendorf to the ubiquous and humble bowl. His sculptural and functional works attempt to get at this Jungian world within.” Gary’s works ring with basic, even primitive, shapes and representational elements like a Native American face, botanical finger drawings, and a series of voluptuous Venuses. What ties everything together is the wood-firing. “Wood firing and my work cannot be separated,” Gary says. “His glazes are modified after nearly every firing to respond to, and better register the effects of five cords of wood and perhaps six days of firing,“ says Ceramics Monthly. “The 14-day cooling allows dark crystals to form like sparkling snowflakes.”

It was over multiple glasses of wine back in 2007 that the five of us pulled together our concept of creatively going green by repurposing tired or dated household items and furniture and selling them at a traveling venue. We have never looked back. In fact, we have expanded our concept to include new pieces, textiles, jewelry, and baked goods. Each of us has a different style and take on artistic creativity and as a result just about every taste is represented here. That means, there is also something in our various repertoires for just about any look you might be going for in your home.

Mo Flodin, our artist in residence for Eco-Fest has arrived and is beginning work on the sculpture he is creating for New Bo Park. As part of his residency, he is working with Mt. Mercy, Kirkwood, the Johnson School of the Arts and Metro Alternative High School. Kirkwood has provided a studio space for him in the Industrial Technology Building and he is collaborating with the art departments in the four host schools. We met with Conifer Smith, glass artist at Kirkwood to design and develop the glass eyes for the sculpture and spent time at Marion Iron looking for scrap metal. We are having materials donated from CR/ Linn County Solid Waste Agency and the Habitat for Humanity ReStore.
Mo has work installed all over the world and has some wonderful ideas for sculpture for CR. I think this is a rare opportunity for CR and a great human interest story.
Mo’s Dung Beetle sculpture will be unveiled at the Eco-Arts Festival April 16th at 10 am in New Bo Park.

In 1991, Craig Campbell and Priscilla Steele purchased a vintage 1894 storefront that originally housed Marion's Kendall Hardware. The warm hues of wood floors and an ornate tin ceiling that were original to the hardware store, now compliment a collection of original fine art in all media. Visitors will find the work of many of their favorite local, regional & national artists. Co-owner, Priscilla Steele has integrated her studio space into the gallery, so that you may learn how intaglio prints are pulled on an etching press, view her drawings and etchings in process, as well as view a rare selection of lithographs, etchings, foil-stamped monoprints, and wood-cuts. Gallery hours are now Thur, Fri & Sat from 10 in the morning until 6 in the evening ... and anytime you'd like, by appointment. Just call us at 319-373-9211, at least one day in advance, and we'd be happy to open the gallery for you at your convenience ... day or night.
Michael Bond On a trip to Italy about four years ago, I luxuriated in visits to places and art about which I had studied in a succession of classes with renowned Italian Renaissance scholar and professor, Dr. Wallace Tommasini. So it was with great excitement that I enthused that I “…couldn’t wait to see the Duomo!”, as I crossed Florence’s Ponte Vecchio. My head was bent low over multiple guidebooks which I was busily cross-referencing, and members of my ever-forbearing family urged me to simply look up. Talk about a big pizza pie hitting you in the eye! That singular architectural achievement, which is visible from all parts of the city, looms large as a testament to the indomitable genius of its designer Fillipo Brunnelleschi and the civic will of the Florentine populace. Our entire visit was a giddy blur of art, food, family and Italian wine. It was with no small measure of fondness then when I happened upon Michael Bond’s lyrical little etching of the Ponte Vecchio. I’m proud to say that the etchings of Michael Bond are now represented at the gallery.
Stan Fellows Stan had illustrated for the New York Times and The Wall Street Journal, that he had illustrated many books, and he had enjoyed a very busy and successful career as an illustrator for more than thirty years. It’s therefore a particular delight for me to introduce some of Stan’s watercolors to our gallery audience. And, it’s just downright fun that Stan is going to attend and paint during (right on the spot, ladies and gentlemen!) Music in the M.U.D. this Saturday, March 14. Music in the M.U.D. is a new, Saturday night event at Campbell Steele that is getting some serious traction. Pair Stan’s painting with the fact that our cute-as –a-button purveyor of wines, Jeri Travis, will be decanting some delicious selections for our wine bar, and what you have is a great plan. Fun abounds at Campbell Steele.
Mary Snyder Behrends
The rich colors, carefully chosen elements and implied content in Mary’s pieces are not unlike the essence of a Leonard Cohen song. They are not always “pretty” in their overt presentation. They are thought provoking on multiple levels. They use the artist’s substitute for words, visual materials, with economy and a keen sense of purpose. Mary’s work is intense. It rewards the curiosity of the viewer with an understanding of how line, color, texture and composition shape an abstract, poetic conceit.
Julie Kottal With her former advisor, Peter Thompson, Julie shares a keen color sense and a painterly fluency. And, the brilliance of Peter’s teaching and the strength of Julie’s artistic will and vision lie in the dramatic distinctions in their imagery. Since her graduation from Coe College, Julie has truly gained an authority in abstract composition. Her gestural, large-scale work now hanging at the gallery is a juicy testament to the the physically of her medium. I’d say that this woman could handily claim her own status as a “powerhouse”.
